HISTORY OF THE LATE NIGHT HORROR FILM FESTIVAL
In the summer of 2008, horror film aficionado and mass communications student Tony Lucero had a vision. Inspired by some of the country's biggest film festivals, he wanted to bring together a community of local horror filmmakers and showcase their talents. With the help of some of his closest college friends, an old basement art studio in the heart of the vintage Uptown Whittier was transformed into an independent theatre for a week, and The Late Night Horror Film Festival was born.
That cold week in January 2009 attracted a few hundred local film enthusiasts, artists, and horror film enthusiasts who were eager to screen 9 unreleased horror films including 2 features and 7 shorts. Those in attendance, including some of the film selection's Directors, Producers, and Actors, had a chance to network and discuss each other's work. 2 years later, the LNHFF was held online where "audiences" screened, commented on, and voted for their favorite short and feature-length films.
The LNHFF continues to grow….

“I chose to hold this year’s LNHFF in Downey for several reasons,”explains LNHFF Producer/Founder Tony Lucero.” First of all, I worked at Krikorian Premiere Theatres Downey Cinema 10 as an usher and projectionist while I pursued my film degree. There, I learned about scheduling show times, operating and maintaining 35mm projectors, and building film reels. It was a real craft. I was involved in one of the many facets of film distribution. Operating 10 projectors at a time and getting things started was a real tedious task. I loved it. That’s when I got the itch. Fast forward a little over a year later and the idea hit me like a freight train. I met and interviewed famed horror icon Robert Englund during a film screening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Then, my vision came full circle. My experience at Krikorian, my education in film and television, and attending that screening was the inspiration I needed and the LNHFF was born. I always felt that holding the LNHFF at KPT, at least one night, was appropriate. After all, If it wasn’t for the job I had there I wouldn’t know the first thing about scheduling or running film screenings. Plus, Downey has a growing community of talented artists, filmmakers, and even has motion picture history. The Downey Arts Coalition and Movie Club have been so supportive of my efforts to bring this Fest to the city. All I want is to bring a little bit of Halloween and Hollywood to the residents of Downey.”
